The Safety and Risk Management Department was established in 2010 as a response to the accreditation requirement and international standards that all hospital and healthcare institutions should not only give appropriate care to patients but to focus on the safety at any step of care giving, including patients and employees. Safety also plays a role in ensuring cost effectiveness, efficacy and efficiency.

The Department includes all 3 approaches to safety:

  1. Infection Control and Prevention: with a dedicated multidisciplinary committee to prevent all aspects related to prevention of hospital acquired infections.

  2. Patient Safety: To have a focused approach on various chapters of patients’ safety.

  3. Occupational Health and Safety: Focused approach to employees and visitors safety within the premises of the hospital.

Therefore, Safety should encompass the patient to include the environment, the staff, the families and all visitors entering the premises.

Infection Control and Prevention

The primary objective of the infection control program is preventive that is to identify and reduce the risk of acquiring and transmitting nosocomial infections among patients, healthcare workers and visitors. The recognition of infections and the identification of the causative pathogens are achieved by a rigorous and continuous surveillance to all floors and units and laboratory results and also by a computer based surveillance program. The protection of the patients as well as the personnel is achieved by implementing infection control policies addressing several issues:

1) Application of adequate Hand hygiene.

2) Assuring adequate, efficient and state of the art technologies for disinfection, sterilization techniques, standard cleaning procedures, and food safety, among other services monitored by the infection control program.

3) Implementation of a well-planned and well- organized waste management policy and protocol according to national standards and monitoring proper hygiene of the environment using adequate disinfectants.

4) A comprehensive vaccination campaign to protect and prevent communicable diseases in patients and among the health care workers.

5) Continuous educational sessions, teaching conferences and seminars conducted by trained and expert staff in the field

In order to raise awareness and sensitize the hospital personnel to these concepts and critical issues and to teach them on various aspects and chapters of infection prevention and control.

The infection control program is available to assist and cooperate with all divisions and units of the hospital in order to achieve its goals and offer an improved and optimal medical care at lower expenses for the patient, the hospital and third parties.

Patient Safety

The role of patient safety is to enhance a culture of safety in the hospital where there is implementation of strong safety management, and where there is an organizational and collaborative learning from accidents translated into systems and processes improvement.

Patient safety approach is by collaborative learning and effective communication and transparency for the good and the bad. The Patient safety role is also to ensure that all related incidents are properly handled, well investigated to find the root causes that led to the incident and implement systems improvement to prevent other occurrences. The patient safety plays a major role in preventing accidents by applying risk management through the hospital to identify risks and prevent related accidents, using quality improvement tools; this is translated into proactive strategies. Continuous education and training is also part of the role of the safety department. Therefore, in addition to improving on all safety aspects in the hospital, it has an important leadership role in making patient safety a priority.

Occupational Health and Safety

Is explained by the conditions and factors that affect the well- being of employees, temporary workers contractors, personnel, visitors and any other person in the workplace.

Occupational health and safety aims at:

  • The promotion and maintenance of high degree of physical, mental and social well- being of workers in all sections and departments of SGHUMC.

  • The prevention among healthcare workers of adverse health effects caused by the working conditions.

  • Protection of the staff from risks resulting from hazardous factors to health.

Therefore, OHS aims at placing and maintaining workers in a safe environment well adapted to physical and mental needs. It aims at the safety of “the whole person”.

OHS helps in preventing occupational accidents to preserve the health and life of the people present in addition to saving costs (direct and indirect costs) for the institution due to accidents. It also helps in increasing productivity by decreasing absenteeism.

The OHS sets a mechanism to identify risks in various areas and departments of the hospital, and systems to develop and implement improvements and corrective measures.

The approach to OHS is also collaborative and multidisciplinary. The OHS issues manual of safety protocols and carries audits and walk-in visits to the departments and units, carry assessments of the hazards and risks and find ways to reduce, mitigate or eliminate them when possible. OHS has a role in continuous education and training of staff to the subject and to various chapters and educate staff on how to protect themselves.

Both Patient Safety and Occupational Health and Safety work in collaboration with a multidisciplinary committee to discuss various issues and problems.
