June is Men’s Health Month & June 21 is Father’s Day!

 The goal of this month is to raise awareness in the community to help boys and men prevent illnesses, promote health and treat diseases early. Men are at a higher risk of developing certain diseases including heart diseases, prostate diseases, colorectal cancer and lung cancer (www.cancer.net).

The following health check-up is recommended for men after consulting their physicians (National Institute of Health NIH 2014):

- Above 50 years of age:

  • Annual Physical Assessment with Blood Pressure Screening and EKG screening

  • Annual Blood tests, urine analysis and stool analysis including blood sugar, kidney function tests, lipid profile and Prostate Specific Antigen or PSA.

  • Endoscopic colorectal screening (Colonoscopy) every 10 years or as directed by the physician. (American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy ASGE, 2015)

  • Chest x-ray for heavy smokers.

- Below 50 years of age:

  • Physical Assessment with Blood Pressure Screening and EKG screening every 2-3 years

  • Blood tests, urine analysis and stool analysis including blood sugar, kidney function tests, lipid profile and Prostate Specific Antigen or PSA every 2-3 years.
